With 900 men aboard, the men engaged the Japanese, destroying or helping destroy four enemy ships. It was hit by a torpedo, then two more torpedoes before sinking. Many men were rescued that day and the following days. Sadly, Donald and 168 other men perished. He was killed in action and his body not recovered.

Donald Labolle was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, The Philippines. on 6 July 1943 at The Battle of Kula Gulf.1

Note*after 6 July 1943 He Donald was the son of Harry and Dora Miller Labolle and spent his youth in Kent WA. He joined the National Guard, where he served for several years until enlisting on Sept. 12, 1942 in the US Naval Reserves.

She was born Feb. 25, 1937, to Donald and Mabel (Adams) LaBolle in Moscow, Idaho, and was raised and educated on Texas Ridge in Idaho. She attended Deary High School and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1955. She continued her education at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.

She lived in the Moscow/Lewiston, Idaho, area and in 1966 moved to Spokane. In 1968, she moved to Moses Lake and worked as a librarian's aide. In 1981, she married John Patrick Corrigan in Moses Lake, and they continued to make their home there. Due to ill health, she moved to Houston to be with her daughter.

Mrs. Corrigan was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Moses Lake.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Kaye and Ahaoma Ohia of Missouri City, Texas, and their children, Edmund Salm Jr. of Ionia, Mich., Grace Emeka and Jenny Lynne Ohia of Missouri City; five stepchildren, Rose and Tim Owens of Tacoma, and their children, Megan and Molly, Janet and Dennis Williams of Vashon Island, and their children, Laney and C.J., Chris Corrigan of Redding, Calif., and his children, Barry and Brooks, Vince Corrigan of Seattle and his son, Chad, Dan and Judy Corrigan of Oak Harbor, and their children, Heather, Dan, Carrie, Christie, Johnny and Michael; a sister, Loretta Gustafson of Lewiston; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins in Idaho. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John, in 1991.
