She Roberta M. Schow

Roberta M. Schow was born November 14, 1931 in Newport Washington and departed this life Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Cass Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 25 days. She was the daughter of William Collins Lear, Sr. and Rowena Works Lear.

Roberta spent the earlier years of her life in the western and north western states of Washington, Idaho and California. She was united in marriage with Glenn Neal Schow and to this union 2 sons Robert and Lyle were born. The Schow family moved to the Archie area in 1974 and made their home. Roberta was a homemaker and loved to cook for her family. It is also understood that she had been a very accomplished horsewoman in her earlier years. Roberta took great pride in her only grandchild, Kirsten, and of her many successes and achievements.

Roberta was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Independence, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by:

Roberta is survived by:
2 sons: Robert Schow and wife Keri of Archie, Missouri
and Lyle Schow and wife Donna of Harrisonville, Missouri.

Other relatives and many, many friends.

Graveside services were held 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Dayton Cemetery in Dayton Missouri.
Rev. Bill Lear and Rev. Ben Lear officiated.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Church of Christ, 1138 E. Gudgell, Independence, Missouri 64055. after 8 April 2009 at OBIT.²

She When Elizabeth Caroline Hulsizer was born on August 5, 1847, in Scranton, Lackawana County, Pennsylvania, her father, Joel, was 31 and her mother, Elizabeth, was 28. She was the fourth of ten children (of whom 3 boys and 6 girls have been identified) and was commonly referred to as Caroline.

By the time Caroline was 3 years old her family lived in nearby Providence Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Her father worked in the iron industry as a roller.

By 1854 (aged 7) her family had migrated west to central Iowa where her father took up farming. (By 1860 he had acquired 160 acres of improved an unimproved land in Douglas Township, Webster County, Iowa, and owned 4 horses, 4 milk cows, 2 oxen, and 2 other cattle.) Strangely, according to 1860 U.S. Census records, Caroline (aged 12) was not living with her family (which would have included her older sister Sarah Olivia, 17, and younger siblings Emily Jane, 8, Fannie E., 6, and William G., aged 1). Instead, she is listed three families down in the census as living in the household of Isaac Young (52, a farmer of a smaller land holding but with 3 adult and 2 minor sons, including Ezra C. Young, aged 19--Caroline's future husband). It is unclear why she was living with the Young's instead of with her biological family or attending school. Census records show that Caroline only had a sixth grade education. (Her oldest brother Benjamin, 22, was a day laborer for the Stephen V. Hall household and was living with them; yet, Caroline is not identified as having any working relationship with the Young's, and she and Ezra would not marry for another eighteen years (December 19, 1878, in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa).

The timeline and level of intimacy of Caroline and Ezra's relationship is unclear. Did they have a daughter, Allada, out of wedlock when Caroline was just 15 years of age? How long did their marriage actually last? This remains uncertain.

According to the U.S. Census of 1870 Caroline (aged 22) continued living in the Young household (listed as keeping house) along with a seven-year-old identified as "Alice Day" (no relationship indicated). The Young's had relocated to Fort Dodge while the Hulsizer's moved twenty miles north to Springvale Township, Humboldt County, Iowa. The 1880 census was the first time that Caroline (aged 32) and Ezra (aged 39) were listed as having their own household. They remained in Fort Dodge with "Allie" (17, identified as a niece) and Lizzie (four-month-old daughter) as members of the household.

In both the 1925 Iowa State Census and 1930 U.S. Census a member of Caroline's household was Allada Kieron (aged 61 and 67 respectively, identified as her daughter). Which begs the question, are "Allice Day," "Allie" and Allada (al' la day) all the same person--Mary Allada Young, the first daughter of Ezra and Caroline whose true identity may have been concealed to protect the family name from potential scandal?

By 1900 Caroline (53) and Ezra (59) were divorced. Being a Civil War veteran Ezra was able to live in the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Linn, Marshall County, Iowa. it's likely that Caroline moved to Corinth Township, Humboldt County, Iowa, prior to 1910 and lived with Hulsizer family members, Elizabeth (90, her mother) and William (50, her brother) as recorded in that year's U.S. Census. This census also indicates that Caroline may have been blind. (No other documentation confirms this condition.)

Caroline lived the latter years of her life with extended family. In 1920, at age 72, she was living in Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa, with Elizabeth Leone Young (39, her daughter) and Frank Salisbury Sloan (46, her son-in-law) and their four children. In 1925, at age 77, she was living 100 miles east in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa, with Allada Kieron (61, her daughter) and Edna E. Berg (29, a border).

Caroline Young died on February 23, 1935, in Waterloo, Iowa, at the age of 87, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Iowa. The cause of her death was complicated by diseases incident to advanced age. She had been in ill health for many years according to her obituary. after 25 February 1935 at BIO.⁷

She A WPA walk in the 1930s of the two cemeteries that were still separate in West Bend found her grave on the Protestant end, not the Catholic part (Sts.Peter and Paul). The walk was over 80 years ago, when more of the stones inscriptions were still fresh. These have been put online by volunteers at IaWpaGraves.org, under Palo Alto County.

Her family moved to Oklahoma after her death, with no one present in West Bend any longer to care for her stone.

In 1866, her father was of record as B.B. Hulsizer, living in in Humboldt County co-founding a unit of the GAR/ Grand Army of the Republic, which was an assocation of Civil War veterans from the Union side. Her New Jersey-born father would move his family to West Bend by the time of their 1880 US Census. That Census recorded her name as Nancy E. and her state of birth as Missouri.

The author of a family tree archived at FamilySearch noted that she alternated between using Nancy E. and Elizabeth N. (The Lizzie seen on her stone woul be a nickname for the latter.)

The tree confirmed her year of death as 1893, confirmed her parents names as matching those in the 1880 US Census in WestBend. At least one of the tree's authors thought or knew she had died in Pottowatami County (Council Bluff?) , but that could not be confimed by records easily available.

He Larry D. Hulsizer, 78, of Logansport, passed away Saturday June 4, 2016 at 11:03 am in Chase Center of Logansport.

Born October 21, 1937 in Peru to the late Jacob B. and Isel (Cook) Hulsizer. On December 18, 1959 in International Falls, MN he married Shirley Ann Duvos who survives.

Larry retired for National Friction in 2002 after 20 years of service. Larry was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War and a Lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #3790. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, metal detecting, flea markets, yard sales, watching wrestling and old cowboy shows on TV. Larry enjoyed karaoke and was well known for his band called County Beats. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving along with his wife is one daughter, Lori (Jeff) Musall, Steele, MO; one brother, Joe (Sandra) Hulsizer, Logansport; four grandchildren, Chris Campbell, James (Victoria) Cain, Zachary Cain and Dustyn Musall; six great grandchildren.

Per Larry's request there will be no visitation or funeral services. A private burial will be held at St. Johns Cemetery. after 4 June 2016 at OBIT.¹
