He was 5th Regiment, PA Calvary, Co. M.
Captured & held as prisoner of war at Andersonville prison. Survived & exchanged April 1865.

Born in Selzach, Solothurn, Switzerland. At age 6 he immigrated with his parents to America where the family settled in Reading, Pennsylvania. Joseph and his brothers all enlisted in the Civil War. All brothers survived the war with Joseph being the only brother who was captured and held prisoner. He was held one year at Andersonville Prison until released in April of 1865. After released, he returned to Reading. Shortly after his return he married Rosa Knerr. While at Reading one of his jobs was a hatter at Mohus Hat factory. In 1879 Joseph & his family moved west. They settled in Linwood Kansas. Rosa, Joseph's wife died with birth of their last child. Joseph remained in Linwood until older age. He decided to join his son's who had moved to the Craig, Colorado area. He remained in Colorado until he became sick. He then returned to Kansas and entered the Old Soldier's Home in Leavenworth, dying shortly after. after 1 February 1864 at Was a POW in Andersonville Prison.⁷

Orland grew up in the home his grandfather built on the homestead farm in Troy. He attended the Little Bear Ridge School and then Troy High School, from which he graduated in 1944. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and deployed to the Philippines, where he spent a little more than a year running heavy dirt-moving equipment. Upon returning to Troy in 1946, he went back to work on his father's farm and also worked at various construction jobs.

On Oct. 26, 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jean Danielson. They made their home across the driveway from Orland's parents. Orland and Dorothy had two children, daughter Jeanne Rosalyn and son Jeffrey Arthur. Dorothy worked in a bank in Troy and Moscow until her retirement. She passed away in 2005 from Alzheimer's disease.

Orland helped run a dairy and farmed the land with his brother for a few years. Orland loved to have various animals on the farm, including cows, sheep, a Shetland pony, guinea hens, ducks, chickens and rabbits. At one time, he had more than 100 rabbits that his children helped care for. After discontinuing the dairy, he owned and operated an excavation and trucking business for many years in Moscow and did work in the surrounding area. Upon retirement, he ran and was elected Latah County road commissioner. He worked in that position for many years to follow.

Orland was a hard worker his entire life, providing for his family. He enjoyed boating, camping and fishing. They spent most weekends at Lake Coeur d'Alene and Chatcolet Lake. Orland and Dorothy spent several years building their dream lake cabin near Conkling Park on Lake Coeur d'Alene. They enjoyed entertaining their family and friends there during the summer. Orland and Dorothy also enjoyed dancing and loved to go out with their friends from Troy and Moscow.

Orland was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Moscow. He was very involved in its renovation through the years. He always enjoyed helping fix things to make sure they looked nice and worked properly. He always said that growing up on the farm during the Depression years forced him to learn how to make do and fix things yourself.

Orland suffered a fall and then moved into Whitman Senior Living Center in Pullman for about a year and a half. Then, his daughter moved him to Illinois last month. His Alzheimer's was progressing, and he suffered greatly from that until his passing.

Dennis Ray Bower, passed away early April 4, 2019 at his home in Spokane Valley. He was born May 20, 1955 at Selfridge AFB Hospital in Mt. Clemens, MI. In October of 1955 the family moved "home" to Spokane, WA and settled in Millwood. Dennis attended West Valley Schools, graduating in 1973. During his school years he participated in Boy Scouts, played piano and the drums, forming a rock band with his friends. After graduating from high school, he was employed by Kaiser Aluminum, Trentwood, and retired after 43 years as a boiler house operator. Dennis was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed kayaking, hiking and climbing, especially on Mt. Rainier and the North Cascade Range. He loved pinball and owned and restored several pinball machines. He was a member of the local pinball community.

He is survived by his two sons, Russell Bower and wife Misti, Spokane Valley, Adam Bower, Otis Orchards, WA; his parents Don and Eleanor Bower of Millwood, WA; two sisters, Susan Golden of Orofino, ID, and Lois Sargent of Spokane, several, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Neptune Society, Celebration of Life Service to be held at Woodlawn Cemetery , St. Maries, ID at a later date.
