The New Jersey branch of the Garrigues family supported open rebellion against the British Crown the Philadelphia branch of the Garrigues family being Quakers did not. Jacob was disowned by his Quaker family in Philadelphia so Jacob decided to remove all connections with them and formally dropped the "e" from his surname.1
