He was excommunicated a number of times: by Pope Niccolò III Orsini in 1277, by Pope John XXII Duèse in 1319, renewed Oct 1320 and Aug 1321by the same Pope for heretic cults and idolatory, he was also banished as an enemy of the Church by the Judge of the Marca di Ancona Niccolò da Reggio in 1319 and declared heretic, idolator and enemy of the Church by the Archbishop of Ravenna in Dec 1321; he was laced in prison by his citizens who rebelled against him on il 22-IV-1322; he was lynched by a mob who stormed the castle where he was imprisoned in Urbino and his corpse torn to pieces and dragged in the dust to be buried together with dung and a horse in unconsecrated ground.¹
