     Moses Howe was born on 24 March 1750 at Vernon, Windham, VT. He married Submit (Elizabeth?) Scott, daughter of Capt. Moses Scott and Elizabeth Henry, on 16 February 1773 at Brattleboro, Windham, VT. Moses Howe died on 18 December 1817 at Vernon, Windham, VT, at age 67.

     Submit (Elizabeth?) Scott was born on 16 February 1750 at Hatfield, Hampshire, MA.² She married Moses Howe, son of Caleb Howe and Jemima Sawtelle, on 16 February 1773 at Brattleboro, Windham, VT. Submit (Elizabeth?) Scott died after 1820.

     Jonathan Jones was born on 21 July 1722 at Coventry, Tolland, CT. He married Abigail Strong, daughter of Supply Strong and Lois Buell, on 12 March 1747 at Coventry, Tolland, CT. Jonathan Jones died on 7 June 1801 at age 78.

     Lois Jones There are three more children by her 2nd husband's first wife. She was born on 5 May 1757 at Lebanon, New London, CT. She married John Lamphere circa 1779 at of Lebanon, New London, CT. Lois Jones married Benjamin Bird, son of Deacon Samuel Bird and Mabel Jenner, in 1794 at Bird's Hotel, Colesville, Broome, NY. Lois Jones died on 15 December 1841 at Windsor, Broome, NY, at age 84.

     James Ireland Sr. and Susan A. Phillips, Mrs. were divorced. James Ireland Sr. was born on 1 January 1836 at Kenoway, Fife, Scotland. He married Isabelle Dick, daughter of David Dick and Elizabeth (Bethea) Jackson, on 6 December 1861. James Ireland Sr. married Susan A. Phillips, Mrs. on 12 September 1883. James Ireland Sr. married Anna Margaret Fornof on 28 April 1889. James Ireland Sr. died on 7 August 1913 at Fairbury, Jefferson, NE, at age 77.

     William Ireland Emigrated to America in 1842. He was born on 1 August 1805 at Wemys, Fife, Scotland. He married Catherine Pride, daughter of William Pride and Janet (Jennett) Frazier, in 1833. William Ireland died on 10 October 1857 at Deer Park, LaSalle, IL, at age 52.

     Catherine Pride was born on 23 June 1811 at Kettle, Fife, Scotland. She married William Ireland, son of William Ireland and Ann Kinnear, in 1833. Catherine Pride died in May 1896 at Miles City, Custer, MT, at age 84.

     Luke Hammond was born on 18 July 1834 at Iping, Sussex, England. He was christened on 10 August 1834 at Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Iping, Sussex, England.³ He appeared on the census of 1851 at Stedham, Sussex, England; Wheelwright apprentice. Age 16. Born at Iping, Sussex.⁴ He married Harriet Maides, daughter of Thomas Maides and Jane Harris, on 20 April 1856 at Church of St. Botolph, Northfleet, Kent, England; Marriage Certificate says that his father was a farmer, her father was a gardener. Witnesses were Richard Maides & Jane Maides. He was a wheelwright. Both were of full age (bachelor & spinster).⁵ Luke Hammond and Harriet Maides immigrated on 4 June 1856; Sovereign of the Seas. From London. Landed in New York City.⁶ Luke Hammond June 24, 1920 issue of The Belleville Telescope. The headline was “Found Penniless in Salt Lake City”. The article goes: Luke Hammond, for many years a well-to-do farmer near Sheridahl, according to word reaching here, was found at a depot in Salt Lake City, ill and nearly penniless. The police of Salt Lake took him to the D. & R.G. railroad station and placed him upon a train and started him for his home at Smith Center, Kans., where he has been staying since selling his farm in Union township, Republic county. He is more than eighty years of age and has always worn long hair which is as white as the driven snow. He has only gone West a short time ago and on making his appearance in Salt Lake was taken in charge by the police who cared for him at an emergency hospital. In placing him upon a train they gave him a note to all conductors to take charge of him. C.V. Miller, cashier of the Valley Bank at Oxford, Kans., was notified and arrangements made for funds to meet Hammond’s trip home. on 24 June 1920.⁷ He died on 9 March 1923 at Gaylord, Smith, KS, at age 88; From the Scandia Journal, Republic County, Kansas, 15 March 1923, front page:

"L. L. Hammond Dead.

Luke L. Hammond, 88 years, an old resident of this community, died at the home of his daughter in Gaylord, Kansas, last Friday, March 9. The remains were brought here and laid to rest in Union Valley Cemetery after funeral services were held at the Lincoln Church near Courtland.

Mr. Hammond was a unique individual. His copious white beard and long flowing hair gave him a picturesque appearance that suggested a Whitman or a Whittier. Even in his eighties his step was sprightly and his body seemed to possess much younthful vitality. Being a native of England, was given much to exaltation of her customs. His hobby was fruit raising, he had a fine orchard on his farm until the tornado of a few years back devastated it.

Luke Hammond was born 18 July 1834, at Iping, Sussex county, England, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maria Dunham, of Gaylord, Kansas, March 9, 1923, at the age of 88 years, 7 months, and 22 days. He was married April 20, 1856, to Harriet Maides of Northfleet, England. Mr. and Mrs. Hammond sailed for the United States the following summer, settling at Joliet, Ill., later moving to Plainfield, Ill., where his family resided while he was in the service of the United States government during the civil war, engaging in ship building. He later moved to Rockport, Missouri, in 1879, and to Kansas in 1882, locating in the Union township near Scandia, where he resided until 1919, since then he made his home with his daughters, Mrs. Marietta Jacobs, and Mrs. Maria Dunham of Gaylord, Kansas. To this union 10 children were born 5 girls and 5 boys. His wife, three boys, and two girls preceeded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss his three daughters, Mrs. Anna [Marie, not Anna]Dunham of Lebanon, Kansas, [Mrs. Marietta Jacobs], and [Mrs. Anna Dunton] and two sons, Edwin C. Hammond of Courtland, Kansas, and Gerald F. Hammond of Osage City, Kansas, 32 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren." Punctuation is theirs, not mine.² He was buried on 11 March 1923 at Union Valley Cemetery, Scandia, Republic, KS.²

His daughter Mary H. was 42, keeping house, born at Iping, Sussex.⁹ He left a will on 29 July 1882 at of Stedham, Sussex, England.¹⁰ He died on 3 June 1885 at Stedham, Sussex, England, at age 82; District of Midhurst, Sub-district of Harting. 82 years old, retired farmer, died of "natural decay". Mary Hannah Hammond, daughter, present at death. She lived at Stedham. Death was registered on 10 June 1885.^11,10,12 He was buried on 8 June 1885 at Churchyard of St. James the Great, Stedham, Sussex, England.¹³ His estate was probated on 29 July 1885 at Chichester, Sussex, England; He left an estate of £800, 16 shillings. That is the equivalent of £80,000 in 2012.¹⁴

     Hannah Adams was born in 1803 or 1804 at Trotton, Sussex, England; Death record shows that she was 65 when she died on 2 May 1869. Family records show that she is the daughter of John Adams (shoemaker) and Mary. I have no idea how they concluded that. The family also states that she was born in the same year as her husband.^4,5,6,7 She married Richard Hammond, son of Richard Hammond and Mary Foote, on 30 July 1833 at Church of St. Peter, Petersfield, Hampshire, England; John & Charlotte Adams were witnesses to this marriage.² Hannah Adams appeared on the census of 1841 at Iping, Sussex, England; Age 35. Born in Sussex.⁸ She appeared on the census of 1851 at Stedham, Sussex, England; Age 49. Laundress. Born at Trotton, Sussex. They had a servant (Jane Mosley, age 19, born at Stedham) in the household in 1851.⁹ She appeared on the census of 1861 at Stedham, Sussex, England; Age 56. Laundress.
